Diving & Snorkeling
Snorkeling or diving?
Snorkeling needs no experience: you float at the surface with a mask, snorkel and fins, and most trips provide the gear. Diving takes you deeper and needs either a diving certification or an introductory dive with an instructor. If you're not sure how comfortable you are in the water, a snorkeling trip is an easy way to find out.
Looking after the reef
- Don't stand on or touch the coral: it's alive and breaks easily.
- Use a reef-safe sunscreen, or wear a rash vest instead.
- Don't feed the fish or take anything from the reef.
Diving and flying home
If you dive, plan a gap between your last dive and your flight home. Common dive-safety guidance is at least 18 hours, and longer after several days of diving, so avoid booking a dive on your last day.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Introductory dives are made for people with no experience and are led by an instructor. You'll be asked to fill in a short medical questionnaire before diving.
Usually, but not always. The "What's included" list on each tour page says what's provided.
The Red Sea off Hurghada is around 22 °C in the coolest months (January to March) and reaches about 28 °C in late summer. Many people are comfortable without a wetsuit from May to November; in winter a shorty or rash vest helps on longer swims.
