What a Luxor day trip usually covers
Most itineraries split the day between the two banks of the Nile. On the East Bank are Karnak, a vast temple complex built and extended over some two thousand years, and Luxor Temple in the town centre. On the West Bank are the Valley of the Kings, where New Kingdom pharaohs were buried, the terraced temple of Queen Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon.
Exactly which sites are visited, and whether entrance tickets and lunch are included, differs between tours: each tour page lists its inclusions.
How long the day is
Hurghada to Luxor is roughly 300 km by road across the Eastern Desert, so expect around four hours each way and a pickup before sunrise. It is a long day: bring water, a hat and sunscreen, and wear comfortable shoes, because the temples involve a lot of walking in the sun.
Before you go
- Bring your passport or a copy of it: there are security checkpoints on the desert road.
- Carry some cash in small notes for tips, drinks and optional extras.
- Plan an easy day afterwards; most people are tired after around eight hours on the road.
